Himalayas are surrounded by thousands of square kms of central Asia and the weather patterns here move moderately slowly. In the winters the Kullu valley is renowned for long fine weather spells with very light winds. And in general has better weather from the mountains further west. This leads to reliable recrystallised powder snow and no comparison with the ranges outside Asia can convey the grandeur of the Himalayas.

Due to this unique combination of recrystallised powder snow and sensational skiing terrain manali has been home to Himachal helicopter skiing for the last 18 years.

The local people have only started to ski in the last few decades but manali has already produced many 1st grade skier, several of them are on the national team and have represented the country in many international events including the Winter Olympic Games.

Ski Lifts have just started to be built in this part of the world. And already India has the highest ski lift on earth at gulmarg in Kashmir.

A poma lift is being built at solang a small ski resort about 13 kms from manali and will be ready for the 2010 winter season.
